Screw Gauge / Micrometer

 What is a Screw gauge or Micrometer:

It's an instrument which can measure dimension like Vernier caliper but with a better accuracy than Verner Caliper. The Area of contact is better than Vernier caliper as the contact anvils are circular in shape.



Screw gauge has Least count of 0.01mm and is widely used to measure diameter, Thickness, width, etc.,

We have digital screw gauge as well with least count of 0.001mm and attached with a digital display, it's also called as Micrometer. The display can be switched between inches and mm

There are different types of Micrometer like, Internal Micrometer, Depth Micrometer, Disc Micrometer, Point Micrometer, Thread pitch micrometer, etc.,

Vernier Caliper

 What is a "Vernier Caliper"? Vernier Caliper is an instrument used to measure short distance(like a scale, Measuring Tape). see below picture of a Vernier caliper (Analog), The graduations on the caliper is used to define the measurement value in it's units. The one in the picture has units "inch" and  "mm" as shown below. Least count:   The least value we can measure with the Instrument. The Least count of a Analog Vernier caliper is 0.02mm Nowadays we get more and more digital products, same way we have Digital caliper which helps inspector not to strain his eyes to look through the graduations! the digital reader does it and shows the value digitally, see below picture.  How did I become a Metrologist? I did complete my schools in a small town in Tamil Nadu, wherein after SSLC had a dilemma whether to study Arts or science, after thinking and consulting known well-wishers finally chosen to go for Technical Education which will be interesting and rewarding as the long term future in Technical stream is greater!
