Steel Rule

Image
Steel Rule:         Steel rule is simply the linear scale with graduations like the ones we used in school, however the difference is that the ones we had used in school is made of acrylic or wood wherein the Steel rule is made of steel.  One more key difference is the Calibration to verify the accuracy of the graduations on the scale. When we use some instrument to qualify a product we must ensure that the instrument we use is accurate and not defective. hence we do verify the instrument with a better accurate standard(in most cases the Gauge block/Slip gauge). The steel rule can be in metric and/or inches as required.

Screw Gauge / Micrometer

What is a Screw gauge or Micrometer: It's an instrument which can measure dimension like Vernier caliper but with a better accuracy than Verner Caliper. The Area of contact is better than Vernier caliper as the contact anvils are circular in shape. Screw gauge has Least count of 0.01mm and is widely used to measure diameter, Thickness, width, etc., We have digital screw gauge as well with least count of 0.001mm and attached with a digital display, it's also called as Micrometer. The display can be switched between inches and mm There are different types of Micrometer like, Internal Micrometer, Depth Micrometer, Disc Micrometer, Point Micrometer, Thread pitch micrometer, etc., Disc Micrometer: Point Micrometer: Internal Micrometer: Depth Micrometer: Thread Pitch Micrometer and anvils(V's and Cone's):

Vernier Caliper

Image
What is a "Vernier Caliper"? Vernier Caliper is an instrument used to measure short distance(like a scale, Measuring Tape). see below picture of a Vernier caliper (Analog), The graduations on the caliper is used to define the measurement value in it's units. The one in the picture has units "inch" and  "mm" as shown below. Least count:   The least value we can measure with the Instrument. The Least count of a Analog Vernier caliper is 0.02mm Nowadays we get more and more digital products, same way we have Digital caliper which helps inspector not to strain his eyes to look through the graduations! the digital reader does it and shows the value digitally, see below picture. The Least count of Digital caliper is 0.01mm Also we have Dial caliper evolved before Digital caliper as shown below, The dial with graduation make it easy for Inspector.  Low force Caliper: The typical Vernier/dial/digital calipers does not have any control on force applied on comp...
My Journey as a Metrologist... After joining in Standard's Room in my first company, I did understood that working is fairly easier than studying. Let me tell you why, while studying we have different subjects and theories, we need to study all the subject cover most of the syllabus to secure passing score or to understand concepts. wherein it's not the case in work, it's very specific and not too wide! Let's take my example, at Standards room my job is to Calibrate measuring Instruments and maintaining them safely, when required issue the instrument to the user and ensure that the quality of the instrument is often verified. it's quite simple isn't it? I don't have to worry about Thermodynamics, Fluid Control system, Manufacturing Technology, etc.,etc., just maintain instruments and calibrate them periodically.(I know some of you may disagree with me stating that every job has more insight but it is within it's boundary, say for example as a Quality in...
How did I become a Metrologist? I did complete my schools in a small town in Tamil Nadu, wherein after SSLC had a dilemma whether to study Arts or science, after thinking and consulting known well-wishers finally chosen to go for Technical Education which will be interesting and rewarding as the long term future in Technical stream is greater! I did not have any idea about which stream to choose in Technical, There were 3 high weight streams are suggested as my score in SSLC is above 92%. Those disciplines were Mechanical, Electrical and Civil.  After a long thinking and discussion with known faces, I decided to go for Mechanical engineering as the Electrical is considered risky and civil considered risky and hardwork! :) I did completed my Technical Diploma, First Class with Honors and joined a well known Two wheeler Manufacturer far away from home. When I joined the company they did another round of interview to choose a person for Standards room(considered as prestigious j...
Metrology: What is Metrology? Metrology is a field which deals with Measurement. What is Measurement? Measurement is the way we confirm the dimensional limits an object, Let's say I have a water bottle of 1 litre, the bottle can hold maximum 1 liter of water hence the measure here is 1 litre. When we deal with components the size is defined in the drawing which is then measured with an instrument to confirm. Simple examples of measurements are as follows, these may have different units accordingly.  Weight, Length, Thickness, Width, Volume, Torque, Force, etc.,  The unit of measurement is expressed according to the requirement by different geographical locations, However conversion is possible to express the unit as required. UK, Asia does follow Metric system(meter, millimeter, kg, litre, kgf, etc.,) wherein western countries use Imperial system(inches, feet, Ounce, Pound, Lbf, etc.,).
Created a Blog today! :) Wanted to cater my expertise and knowledge so that others who are new can learn things easily. This is my first attempt so this might not be perfect in many aspects, However will try to improve as progress.
