Vernier Caliper

 What is a "Vernier Caliper"?

Vernier Caliper is an instrument used to measure short distance(like a scale, Measuring Tape). see below picture of a Vernier caliper (Analog), The graduations on the caliper is used to define the measurement value in it's units. The one in the picture has units "inch" and  "mm" as shown below.

Least count:

The least value we can measure with the Instrument. The Least count of a Analog Vernier caliper is 0.02mm

Nowadays we get more and more digital products, same way we have Digital caliper which helps inspector not to strain his eyes to look through the graduations! the digital reader does it and shows the value digitally, see below picture. The Least count of Digital caliper is 0.01mm

Also we have Dial caliper evolved before Digital caliper as shown below, The dial with graduation make it easy for Inspector.

Low force Caliper: The typical Vernier/dial/digital calipers does not have any control on force applied on component while measurement, though human hand can have slight variation in applied force at the point of use, there's a Vernier which which has a force indicator(a needle which moves when we handgrip the part through measuring Jaw) This is useful for rubber component measurements and plastic part measurements.
